ENERGY STAR roof specifications are not restricted to any particular type of roof product, and include:
ENERGY STAR qualified roof products reflect more of the sun's rays. This can lower roof surface temperature decreasing the amount of heat transferred into a building. Roof products qualify for the ENERGY STAR label based on their solar reflectance, without compromising product quality and performance.
ENERGY STAR labeled roofs are more common on commercial buildings, but can also be used on residential homes. You’ll get the most benefit if you live in a hot sunny climates where you are using your air conditioning a lot. If your house is already shaded and the roof is not exposed to much sun, then a reflective roof may not provide a significant benefit. The benefits will also be lessened if the attic space is well insulated.
